Here is what a lift pass costs in 2026/27, which slopes suit your level and how to avoid weekend traffic and lift queues.

Which slopes suit you?

Half of the slope kilometres are marked blue. That makes Winterberg ideal for beginners, returning skiers and families. The runs are short, you are back at the lift quickly and can practise turns again and again.

  • Beginners: Start on the gentle nursery slopes with magic carpets and the kids' ski area before moving on to the blue runs.
  • Intermediates: About 12 km of red runs are spread across several slopes. That is enough for a varied day.
  • Experts: There are only about 1.5 km of black runs. If you want more vertical, head to the Alps.

Getting there by car or train

From Dortmund or Cologne you will reach Winterberg in about one and a half to two hours, depending on traffic. On weekends with fresh snow the last few kilometres get jammed and the car parks fill up early. Plan to arrive when the lifts open.

The train avoids the traffic. The RE 57 runs from Dortmund via Bestwig to Winterberg station. From there, ski buses take you to the lifts, depending on day and season.

Night skiing, sledging and cross-country

Skiing under floodlights is an experience of its own. The slopes are usually quieter in the evening, and an after-work ticket is often enough. The lift status shows which runs are lit on which days.

Families love the sledging slope at the Kappe. With your own sledge it is free, and you can hire one on site. When there is enough snow, cross-country trails are groomed around Winterberg and Neuastenberg. Winter hiking trails are open even when the trails are not.

Where to stay: hotel, apartment or day trip?

From North Rhine-Westphalia a day trip works fine. If you stay two or three nights, you skip the drive and are first at the lift in the morning. Apartments and hotels within walking distance of the lifts book up fast on snowy weekends. Book early, ideally with free cancellation in case the snow does not come.

Rental and ski school

You will find plenty of rental shops right at the lifts. If you only ski once or twice a year, renting is cheaper than buying. Ski schools offer group and private lessons for children and adults. Book ahead for weekends and school holidays.

What to bring for the day itself is in our ski packing list.

Verdict

Winterberg does not replace the Alps, but it is ideal for a spontaneous ski day, a weekend with kids or your first turns after years off. Watch the lift status, arrive early or go midweek, and use night skiing when the day gets busy.
