Tip
Rent first, then buy

Anyone starting golf quickly faces a wall of clubs, bags and gadgets. The good news: to get started you only need a fraction of it. Here you will learn which clubs belong in a half set, which small items are a must and when a trolley is worth it.

Rent first, then buy

For a taster session, and often for the Platzreife course too, the club provides rental clubs. Only buy once you know you will stick with it. Then a short consultation with the golf pro pays off, because shaft length and flex matter more than the brand.

Half set or full set?

Under the Rules of Golf you may carry a maximum of 14 clubs. Beginners get on well with six to eight (Verbandsbüro).

Club What for? In a half set?
Putter On the green Yes
Sand wedge Bunkers and short approaches Yes
Pitching wedge Approaches from 60–90 m Yes
9, 8, 7 iron Medium distances Yes, often also 5 or 6
Hybrid or fairway wood Long shots from the fairway Yes
Driver Tee shots on long holes Optional

A half set is enough for the Platzreife and your first rounds. A beginner full set pays off if you play regularly and have a fixed budget.

The small items you really need

Pitch fork and ball marker are part of golf etiquette. They show on the course that you know the rules.

Shoes and clothing

Golf shoes give you grip during the swing and protect the green. Spikeless models are comfortable and can be worn off the course too. Many clubs have a dress code, usually a polo or collared shirt and no jeans. Ask your club beforehand.

Bag and trolley

Gear Who is it for?
Stand bag Beginners who carry their bag; light, with fold-out legs
Cart bag Players with a trolley; more pockets, heavier
Push trolley Anyone who regularly plays 18 holes
Electric trolley Frequent players and hilly courses

A stand bag is enough to start. Buy a trolley once you regularly play 18-hole rounds.

What does a starter kit cost?

Package Contents approx. price
Budget Used half set, balls, tees, glove €80–250
Mid-range New half set or beginner full set, bag, shoes, accessories €350–800
Ambitious Game-improvement set, possibly with fitting €900–1,800 and more

Conclusion

Rent at first, then buy a half set with putter, wedges, three irons and a hybrid. Add balls, tees, pitch fork, ball marker, glove and a light stand bag. Driver, trolley and premium balls come later, once you know how you play.

Frequently asked questions

How many golf clubs do I need as a beginner?

Six to eight are enough: putter, sand wedge, pitching wedge, 7 to 9 iron and a hybrid. The maximum allowed is 14 clubs.

Do I need a driver as a beginner?

No. A driver is hard to control. To start, a hybrid or fairway wood is enough for long shots.

Which golf balls suit beginners?

Cheap two-piece balls or lake balls. Expensive premium balls are not worth it at first, as you will often lose balls.

How much does basic golf equipment cost?

With a used half set you can start from around €80 to €250, while new mid-range equipment costs around €350 to €800.
